NATO Exercise Trident Jupiter 19-1, the first exercise of a three-part continuum that ranges from Small Joint Operations to Major Joint Operations Plus, has just come to an end. The exercise took place between 5 and 14 November concurrently at various locations across Europe, including the Joint Force Training Centre (JFTC) in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Major General Adam Joks, JFTC Commander, summarized the event during the closing ceremony in Bydgoszcz, held on 14 November.

“With the end of Trident Jupiter 19-1, we are actually standing in the middle, of what is called a Major Joint Exercise Continuum” – said Major General Joks. “I am excited that Joint Force Training Centre is playing a significant role in this large scale exercise campaign, which will see Trident Jupiter 19-2 and Loyal Leda 2020 in the months to come”.

Among units that participated in the exercise at JFTC, there were Joint Logistics Support Group with its Commander, Brigadier General Jaroslav Schön, Multinational Civil/ Military Cooperation Group from Italy, Poland’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Task Force as well as representatives from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and NATO Joint Warfare Centre.

Exercise Trident Jupiter 19-1 was a two-level (strategic/operational) high-intensity Computer-Assisted Command Post Exercise that brought together Component Commands of the NATO Response Force 2020 (NRF20), Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) and Partner Nations. It involved personnel from more than 30 NATO Member and Partner Nations, as well as governmental and international organizations. Altogether, more than 3,000 civilian and military staff worked together in the exercise as participants, evaluators and observers.

The exercise tested and evaluated the ability of land, maritime, air, and special operations component commands of NRF20 to plan and conduct Small Joint Operations within a designated joint operations area and also certified STRIKFORNATO as a NATO Expanded Task Force. Based on a fictitious, but very realistic Article 5 scenario, called OCCASUS, Trident Jupiter 19-1 demonstrated the Alliance’s commitment to collective defence and security in a complex threat environment. The scenario allowed the participants to practise and test their skills and abilities in all warfare domains. It also addressed key aspects of NATO-led combined joint operations, ranging from Small Joint Operations to Major Joint Operations Plus.

Trident Jupiter 19-1 is the first part of NATO’s Trident Jupiter 19 Exercise Campaign, sponsored by the Allied Command Transformation. The campaign consists of two linked Computer-Assisted Command Post Exercises directed by the Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway, as well as the one-level (tactical/land-centric) Loyal Leda, which will be directed by the Joint Force Training Centre in 2020.
